The South Central Railway on Saturday clarified that an incident of rape of a girl took place on Friday outside the Ramagundem railway station and not in the station's premises.
"It is clarified that the said condemnable incident took place outside the railway station premises at Ramagundam, and not at the station. The case is being dealt with by the local police. The victim, who was on the platform, was apparently lured by a stranger on the promise of guiding her to get a train to her destination. He led her outside the railway station premises," the SCR said in a press release.
"Though the reported incident took place outside the railway station premises, SCR is deeply saddened, and concerned that the security of an unaccompanied female passenger was affected," the SCR said.
SCR says that in view of this incident, it has taken several measures to prevent such incidents in future.
"They include frequent announcements over the public address system at stations, advising the passengers, especially women, not to fall prey to any strangers regarding boarding of trains, etc.; displaying messages at railway stations to sensitize and spread awareness among passengers on this subject; and alerting the RPF/GRP and the local station staff to keep a special watch on the security of lone women passengers, especially during nights," the SCR said.
The SCR has announced that passengers may approach the local enquiry counter or the station master for any enquiry, and for any guidance needed in catching the right train to their destination.
"In case passengers are approached by any unknown person or face any security problem in the railway premises, they are requested to immediately contact the local RPF/GRP or any nearest railway staff for assistance," officials said. (INN)
