Rajab-ul-Murajjab is one of the four sacred months in the Islamic calendar. "Rajab" implies respect, and therefore, any displays of violence are strictly forbidden during this month.
However, the Rajab moon (which will signal the beginning of the month of Rajab-ul-Murajjab) is yet to be sighted in the night sky, leading the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to announce that Saturday will be the 30th of the month preceding Rajab-ul-Murajjab, i. e., Jumada-ul-Thaani.
The committee assembled in Hyderabad on Friday evening, and announced that the moon has not been sighted and that therefore, Saturday would be the 30th of Jumada-ul-Thaani.
Accordingly, Shab-e-Miraj, which is one of the three holy nights of Islam, and which celebrates an auspicious nocturnal journey undertaken by the prophet Muhammad in the year 621, will be celebrated on June 6th.
The president of Majlis-e-Ulema-e-Deccan, Syed Mohammed Qubul Pasha Quadri Shuttari, made the official declaration after the Ulema (a body of learned, religious men) met at the Hussaini Building in Moazzam Jahi Market.
The meeting of Ruet-e-Hilaal Committee was attended by Moulana Mufti Mohammed Azeemuddin, Moulana Syed Kazim Pasha Quadri, Moulana Syed Mohammed Aulia Husssaini Murtuza Pasha and other prominent Muslim scholars and elders. (INN)
