Telangana's "green man" Daripalli Ramaiah, who is said to have planted over one crore trees, was injured in a road accident in Khammam district on Wednesday.
The 85-year-old, popularly known as "Vanajeevi" Ramaiah, a recipient of the Padmasri, suffered injuries to a leg and his head when a bike rammed into him while he was crossing the road to water plants at Pallegudem village in the early hours.
He was rushed immediately to a nearby hospital. According to the doctors, he had suffered a fracture in a leg and injuries on his head.
TRS MP Santosh Kumar spoke to the doctors over the phone and enquired about Ramaiah's condition. He directed the hospital authorities to ensure the best possible treatment to the octagenarian.
Minister for Health T Harish Rao too enquired about the health condition of Ramaiah, and directed the officials concerned to provide the best medication for the speedy recovery of Ramaiah.
Rao said that the State government would extend all possible support to the family members of Ramaiah, and expressed confidence that the latter would return to normalcy in a couple of days.
Popular as "Chettu (tree) Ramaiah" and "Vanajeevi (forester) Ramaiah", Ramaiah received the Padmasri in 2017, his concern for the environment being acknowledged with India's fourth highest civilian award.
Known for his single-minded devotion to planting saplings, he is said to have planted over a crore trees in the last five decades.
