President of the Telangana Civil Liberties Committee (CLC), Gaddam Laxman, along with State General Secretary N Narayana Rao, today demanded that the State government order a comprehensive inquiry into the suicide of Dr Katravath Suresh Naik, a first-year postgraduate student in the Department of General Surgery at Osmania General Hospital.
Addressing a media conference at NSS in Hyderguda, the CLC leaders, along with the deceased's mother Nagamani and his brother-in-law U Ravi, said that they had recently conducted a fact-finding visit to Osmania Medical College to examine the circumstances surrounding his death.
They alleged that Naik, who they said had a promising future, had died by suicide after experiencing severe mental distress reportedly due to harassment by senior students.
The CLC leaders also called for amendments to the National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations, saying that the existing norms were inadequate and unacceptable to the students.
They also urged the State government to extend comprehensive support to the bereaved family.
