The Bangalore police have reportedly busted a plot to assassinate MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi.
According to unconfirmed reports, in a joint operation, the Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka police arrested 4 persons of a 5-member gang which was on its way to Hyderabad from Bangalore to execute its plan.
The gang was intercepted at Hindupur of Anantapur district. However, the gangsters tried to escape from police custody while being taken back to Bangalore. The police then open fire killing one of them on the spot. The gang leader, K Giri, too, was injured in the firing.
The police then took all 4 gang members into custody again, and shifted them back to Bangalore for further investigations. Giri has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
However, this information was not confirmed by any police official in Bangalore or Hyderabad.
The police have reportedly recovered 2 revolvers and 2 bullets, and Rs. 2.5 lakhs in cash, from the accused.
Meanwhile, according to sources, MIM President Asaduddin Owaisi called on City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma on Sunday to discuss the issue.
Sources further say that Giri, a notorious criminal, had taken "supari" (a contract) from a Hyderabad-based realtor to assassinate Akbaruddin Owaisi. The realtor is reportedly having a land dispute with the MIM leader. However, the police are looking the case from other angles, too.
It may be mentioned that Akbaruddin Owaisi survived an assassination bid in May 2011 in the Barkas area of the Old City of Hyderabad.
While addressing a public meeting at Yakutpura during the 2014 election campaign, Akbaruddin Owaisi had stated that some gang from Gujarat had been hired to assassinate him.
Akbaruddin Owaisi was re-elected to the State Legislative Assembly for the 4th consecutive term, and was elected as the MIM's Legislature Party leader on Friday. (INN)
