Andhra Pradesh has over 72 lakh vehicles plying on its roads, 8% of the total number of vehicles in the country.
Andhra Pradesh has as many as 72,18,000 registered motor vehicles, roughly 8% of the country's 8,96,18,000 vehicles as on March 31st, 2006.
According to Union Minister Of State For Road Transport and Highways, Mahadeo Singh Khandela, Maharashtra has the maximum number of registered motor vehicles (1,09,66,000) in the country, while Lakshadweep has only 6,000 registered motor vehicles.
Maharashtra is followed by Tamil Nadu (1,00,54,000), Gujarat (86,22,000), Uttar Pradesh ( 79,89,000) and Andhra Pradesh (72,18,000).
Khandela, in a written reply to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha, stated that the figures were available till March 31st, 2006.
Registration, regulation and control of motor vehicles falls under the purview of states/UTs. However, the states/UTs were earlier advised by the ministry to frame policies to discourage ownership of multiple vehicles through suitable fiscal disincentives.
