In a major reprieve to the States, the Centre today issued an ordinance exempting State-run medical colleges from National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), a national-level entrance examination for filling in all medical and BDS college seats in the country, for this year.
The Union Cabinet held a crucial meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Delhi over the issue, according to information. Then it took a decision to set the much-objected NEET aside by issuing an ordinance.
The ordinance thus paves the way for the States to conduct their own examinations to fill MBBS and dental seats. However, the Centre and private managements still need to abide by NEET.
With this, the decks are cleared for the two Telugu States, who vehemently opposed NEET, to use their own EAMCET results for admissions.
Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and a few other States which sought relaxation from NEET today expressed pleasure at the decision.
Telangana Health Minister Dr C Lakshma Reddy said that the State would now conduct an entrance test for MBBS and BDS seats.
"We will discuss with the officials and announce dates for the examinations," he said.
