TDP MP Nama Nageswara Rao was arrested for unveiling a statue of the Telugu Desam Party founder N T Rama Rao, on the banks of a canal in Khammam, to mark his 16th death anniversary.
The district administration and police raised serious objection to the installation of the statue without prior permission from the local municipality.
However, the TDP activists had a heated argument with the police and district officials, and unveiled the statue.
The activists questioned the district administration over permission granted for the installation of a statue of the former Chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy at some other important places.
As the situation began to spin out of control, the police lathi-charged the TDP activists, and took the MP into custody.
He was then relocated to the Three Town police station.
In a protest against the arrest, the TDP activists staged a dharna in front of the police station. (INN)
