The Telangana High Court today instructed the state government not to ask the people registering their non-agricultural lands through the Dharani portal, for their Aadhaar details.
Reacting to the petitions filed by two advocates, K Saketh and I Gopal Sharma, who raised concerns about the applicants' privacy, the court directed the government to stall the registrations through the portal until the Aadhaar column on the application form was removed.
It also asked the government and the concerned officials to ensure that sensitive personal details of applicants, including their caste, were not used in the application process.
Explaining its decision, the bench hearing the petitions said that it did not see why such details were needed for land registration.
It also added that the government had not been able to provide adequate information on the steps it was taking to secure the data on the registration website.
"Concerns regarding breaches of privacy are valid. So, it is for the government to make the necessary changes on the Dharani portal to assure the people of the state that no personal data will be breached," the bench said.
The case was then adjourned to December 20.
