Telangana Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy today highlighted the benefits of using organic chemicals for agriculture, and said that such fertilisers could increase crop output without having adverse effects on soil and water quality in the long run.
Stating that Telangana Siri city compost, the organic fertiliser produced by the state's Agro Industries Development Corporation, was a good organic fertiliser, the minister urged the farmers of the state to use the same to drive up output in an ecologically sustainable way.
Speaking at a meeting with the agriculture department officials, Reddy instructed them to take steps to promote and ensure the use of organic fertilisers, and added, "Our government's aim is to provide healthy and quality food items grown using organic fertilisers. For this, officials must create awareness on the benefits of the use of organic fertilisers over chemical ones, residue from which, left on vegetables and fruits, can seriously impact consumers' health."
The minister also asked the officials to provide subsidies of Rs 1,500 to farmers using Telangana Siri to fertilise their lands ahead of the upcoming Kharif cropping season.
The Telangana Siri city compost fertiliser was launched last year to drive down the increasing use of chemical fertilisers, the prolonged use of which leads to the degradation of soil and water quality.
