Boxing world champion Nikhat Zareen was accorded a grand welcome at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad today.
Ministers Srinivas Goud and Vemula Prashanth Reddy, and Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS) chairman A Venkateshwar Reddy welcomed Zareen and congratulated her for winning the gold at the 12th IBA Women's World Boxing Championship held in Istanbul.
Clinching her maiden medal at the world's biggest boxing tournament, Zareen (who competed in the 52 kg category) became only the country's fifth woman to win gold, while Manisha (57 kg) and Parveen (63 kg) bagged bronze medals at the event that concluded last week.
The officials also received other Telangana girls shooter Esha Singh and Nizamabad footballer Guguloth Soumya at the airport.
While Singh won three gold medals in team events in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Germany, Soumya won the Indian Women's League championship with the Gokulam Kerala women's team.
The three were received by a host of officials and paraded in an open-top jeep from the airport.
