The matter pertaining to deaths of 20 red sanders smugglers during the course of police action in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh on April 7 was taken up by the full commission of the NHRC on the second day of its camp sitting at Hyderabad on Thursday.
After hearing the submissions made by the representatives of civil society and the state government, the commission directed that in addition to its earlier order dated April 13, the mobile numbers of all the officials involved in the police action, and the medico-legal reports of the police personnel injured in the action were also to be submitted to it.
The commission also decided to send its own team for an inquiry at the spot. The state government has been asked to facilitate the investigation of the NHRC.
Earlier, on the opening day of the 3-day NHRC camp sitting at Hyderabad, Justice Cyriac Joseph, Justice D Murugesan and S C Sinha, members, heard 21, 22 and 18 matters respectively during the open hearing.
The intervention of the NHRC into the matters taken up for open hearing resulted in relief for many complainants.
Fo example, a husband who was ignoring his wife and mentally sick daughter was made to see reason. He promised to treat his wife well and to get the child treated at Bangalore. Then, a woman SC complainant who was not being appointed on compassionate grounds after the death of her husband, was given appointment as an Office Subordinate. And in another case, APSRTC bus services that were withdrawn earlier to a SC village were restored after the intervention of the commission. (INN)
