Even as the Raj Bhavan issued statements saying the alleged video clips of N D Tiwari in bed with young women were fabricated, Tiwari has resigned as AP’s governor amid vicious protests asking for his exit.
The press note issued by the Raj Bhavan said that Narayan Dutt Tiwari, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, has submitted his resignation to the President of India citing "health grounds", on 26th December 2009.
Yesterday and today saw women’s groups agitating outside the Raj Bhavan hiked up temperatures at the Centre and the State, battling the Rapid Action Force and courting police arrests.
The Congress high command held a high-level meeting in Delhi to discuss the issue, as it was under intense pressure to take action. The party has responded to the resignation by saying that Tiwari had taken the higher moral ground by quitting.
Oommen Chandy and Shivraj Patil are two contenders for the post now.
