The Supreme Court today heard the AP government's lawsuit challenging the AP High Court's ruling saying no to the Muslim quota of 4% for students in professional colleges. The case has again been adjourned to a later date. The High Court had earlier stated that religion-based reservation of this kind was unconstitutional.
The TDP, led by Chandrababu Naidu, has pounced on what he calls the inaction of the Rosaiah government in its commitment to Muslims. The TDP staged a dharna at Indira Park, promising reservation for Muslims if brought into power.
A Congress government act - Reservation in Favour of Socially and Educational Backward Classes of Muslims - that was passed on 23 July 2007, says that 15 socially and educationally backward Muslim classes are to get 4% reservation. The act includes students and employees in its scope.
