Monsoon Session To Last For 7 Days

The decision came after the opposition parties said that the scheduled 5-day session was too short a time for the issues to be discussed.
Hyderabad | 6th July 2010
The monsoon session of the state assembly, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, would be of a 7-day duration, and will last till July 15.

A decision to this effect was taken at a Business Advisory Committee meeting held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of assembly speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy. The decision came after the opposition parties said that the scheduled 5-day session was too short a time for the numerous issues to be discussed.

Talking to media persons after the BAC meeting, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu said that the government had initially proposed that the monsoon session would be of a 5-day duration, while the opposition sought at least a 10-day long session.

Naidu said that the government had cited the forthcoming by-elections as the reason for keeping the monsoon session short. The TDP chief said that he then suggested that the monsoon session should be postponed to a date after the by-elections.

He said that the government was not ready to accept this suggestion and agreed to a week-long session.

The TDP chief said that he hoped that the session would be put to good use, and urged the government to hold discussions on the issues affecting the people. Naidu said that the ruling party should pull up its socks and get down the business of governing.

He said that he had suggested that at least 2 major issues should be taken up for discussion after Question Hour on each day of the session.

Revealing the issues to be raised by the opposition, he said that the 7 important issues that ought to be discussed during the 7 days are Babli, Almatti, fuel price hike, DSC-selections, fee reimbursement, liquor, iron ore mining and discrepancies in the implementation of the MGNREGS.

Apart from the speaker, deputy speaker Nadendla Manohar, Chief Minister K Rosaiah, Geetha Reddy, Dharmana Prasad Rao, Raghuveera Reddy, Opposition leaders N Chandrababu Naidu, K Chiranjeevi, Kishen Reddy, Jayaprakash Narayan and J Rangareddy took part in the BAC meeting.
