The city police have not yet achieved a breakthrough in the sensational
theft of gold and diamond jewellery that occurred at Simhavani Mahankali Temple at Lal Darwaza on Wednesday.
Tension prevailed for several hours near the temple, when the local residents and devotees tried to take out a rally on Thursday in protest against the lack of security measures in the area. However, the rally was foiled by the senior police officials, who assured the protestors of swift action in the case.
Citizens staged a sit-in protest, demanding that Home Minister P Sabitha Indira Reddy and Endowments minister C Ramchandraiah visit the temple.
City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma and other senior police officials who visited the temple assured the locals that the culprits involved in the theft would be arrested soon.
Later, Major Industries and Hyderabad District-in-charge minister J Geetha Reddy also visited the temple and held discussions with members of the temple committee. Besides assuring them of stern action against the culprits, she promised them that round-the-clock security would be provided at all temples.
Following her assurance, the devotees called off their protest.
Meanwhile, the city police have formed special teams to solve the case. Although no police official has gone on record disclosing the details, sources say that the police have identified some suspects in the case. (INN)
