In yet another significant decision giving a boost to agriculture and coming to the rescue of farmers, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who was re-elected TRS president unanimously on Friday, announced a grant of Rs 8,000 crores to give MSPs for farmers' produce.
Shortly after being unanimously re-elected as TRS president for the 8th consecutive time, KCR, draped in the TRS' characteristic pink at its 16th plenary being held at Kompally, announced more sops for the farming community.
Addressing the mammoth gathering at the plenary that dwelled at length upon the various welfare schemes and development programs of the party, the Chief Minister said that efforts were being made to make each farmer a king.
The farmers would be reached out to through committees at the village, mandal, district and state levels to ensure that their produce was purchased for the MSP declared on time, he said. The Rs. 8,000 crores set aside for this would be used for the procurement of paddy, groundnut, red gram and other agricultural crops at the MSP.
Since the process needed some more time, the funds would be given at a later date, and a monetary assistance of Rs 4,000 would be given for two crops right now, he added.
He took exception at some economists discouraging subsidies to farmers - they did not understand the kind of problems that led to farmers committing suicides, he said.
