A train derailment in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday killed at least 35 and injured more than 200.
The mishap took place at 12:20pm, when 15 bogies of the Kalka Mail, travelling from Howrah to Delhi, derailed near Malwa station in the Fatehpur district of UP. This was about 120 km from Lucknow.
The train was moving at a speed of 108 kmph, when the accident occurred. It had 1,200 passengers on board.
Rescue operations took a while, with gas cutters and other equipment being used to cut open the A/C coaches and reach out to the victims. Local citizens are also reportedly helping the rescue team.
The injured have been rushed to Kanpur hospital, some by helicopter. Relief trains arrived from Kanpur, Allahabad and Delhi, and the National Disaster Relief Force was pressed into action as well.
Due to the Kalka Mail derailment, 13 trains have been cancelled and 25 others diverted, along the Allahabad-Kanpur section.
The government has announced Rs. 5 lakh ex-gratia to the next of kin of the dead, Rs. 1 lakh for the seriously injured, and Rs. 25,000 for passengers who suffered minor injuries.
The cause of the derailment is yet to be ascertained, and a probe has been ordered.
