Demanding withdrawal of central paramilitary forces from the Telangana region, activists of the Students Joint Action Committee of Kakatiya University on Friday obstructed the convoy of IT minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah at Aswaraopalli, in Raghunathapalli mandal, in Warangal district.
Raising slogans against the state government and centre, the students demanded that the government withdraw forces immediately from the Telangana region. The students also warned the government of serious consequences if it did not do so.
The students had, earlier, come in a procession from the university and blocked the minister's convoy by forming a human chain. Ponnala was heading towards Jangaon after releasing Godavari river water for the irrigation needs of farmers.
The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the students, and took a few of them into custody. A few students suffered minor injuries in the lathicharge, and were discharged from a hospital after primary treatment.
Tension prevailed in the area for some time as the agitating students picked up a heated argument with the police.
