Police personnel manning the TP Kunta check-post near Badvel in the Kadapa district on Tuesday seized around Rs. 55 lakhs in cash from a man who is suspected to be close to an MLA from Nellore.
According to initial information, the cash was being transported in a car which was stopped and checked by the police personnel at the check-post. The driver of the car, along with 2 more persons, has been detained, and is being interrogated about the source of the cash and its intended destination.
Earlier, on Monday night, another car which had been stopped and searched at the Pipikunta check-post in Gopavaram mandal had yielded cash amounting to Rs. 28 lakhs.
Police sources said that the driver of the car, identified as one Raghavendra, could not convince the police officials about the purpose behind transporting such a huge amount of cash.
His claims that the cash was being taken to purchase iron ore was met with scepticism by the police officials.
Earlier, on Monday, a delegation of the YSR Congress Party leaders had lodged a complaint with Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwar Lal, stating that the Congress was trying to influence voters with bundles of money.
The YSR Congress Party members had also claimed that voters intimidation was rife in the district even as the campaigning for the by-elections to the Kadapa Lok Sabha and the Pulivendula Assembly constituency intensifies.
The by-elections are scheduled to be held on May 8th. (INN)
