Kadapa district has ceased to exist.
With the issuing of a notification, the Kadapa district will be formally called YSR district. The notification, under the Andhra Pradesh Districts (Formation) Act, 1974, brushed aside the objections raised by opposition parties over the renaming.
On Thursday, the birthday of the late chief minister, Revenue Board Secretary Rajashekar Tiwari changed the records in the state gazette after examining objections and requests raised by various interested parties, including Congress and opposition leaders, thus formally renaming the district.
The state Cabinet had decided to rename the district after former chief minister the late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, following his death in a helicopter crash on September 2, 2009. The government opted for the new name of the district as 'YSR district' instead of the earlier proposed 'Y S Rajasekhara Reddy Kadapa district', since it was felt that the name was too lengthy.
Last month, the state cabinet
formally decided to name Kadapa as YSR district.
