Barkha Dutt And Nira Radia Transcript

Transcripts of conversations between journalist Barkha Dutt and lobbyist Nira Radia alleged to reveal hand-in-glove working of journalists and lobbyists.
Hyderabad | 19th November 2010
The recent unearthing of transcripts of conversations between Barkha Dutt, group editor of NDTV, and Nira Radia, a powerful PR consultant and lobbyist who represents the Tatas and the Ambanis, has created an uproar over the extent of influence journalists and lobbyists allegedly exercise on engineering governments in our country.

While Dutt and her employer, NDTV, rubbished the allegations, and called the conversations just 'Ethical Gathering Of Information', the conversations between Dutt and Radia, being interpreted by many as the duo functioning as mediators between and the Congress and the DMK in the negotiations for allotment of union cabinet portfolios for the DMK, have certainly been caught in the eye of a storm.

The DMK had been instrumental in bringing the UPA government back to power again in the 2009 general elections. But what followed was a prolonged stalemate during which the DMK allegedly threatened to withdraw its support unless it was given the 3 Cabinet and 4 Minister Of State berths it had been pressing for for a long time.

The conversations are being interpreted by many people as revealing how Barkha Dutt and Nira Radia acted as agents of the involved parties and orchestrated the distribution of portfolios among the DMK members. Barkha Dutt allegedly even got Ghulam Nabi Azad, former J&K minister and the present Congress party's general secretary in charge of Tamil Nadu affairs, to talk to Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi's daughter, about the Congress' preferences.

In the whole tussle for power, T R Baalu, the shipping minister of the previous government, was left out to bite the dust, and A Raja's name was proposed to take care of one of the portfolios.

In the conversation between Vir Sanghvi, editorial director of Hindustan Times, and Nira Radia, Radia appears to almost dictate to the journalist what he should write on Anil Ambani and the gas controversy.

In Dhaka, I have been forced to watch NDTV as there is no other Indian English News channel available. I understood one thing, that Burkha dutt is a real b... and ready to ge the extra mile for her own benefit and even does not care in spoiling the country reputation in front of the world. Or you can say she is another arundhoti roy, with different plateform. You will find her talk shows full of Bangalis as there is no other intellactuals available in india.

It was evident that barkha has committed an error and is guilty on 2 counts. Firstly why was she the only one Radia contacted (her image is probably someone from whom the work can be done) and not any other journalist who is close to congress. The second one is as the editor of open manu himself spoke about that she had to report the story since it was strong and definitely required mention that Raja was loobying thru corporates. She only was beating round the bush on NDTV instead of trying to defend herself or she was throwing her frustrations on manu. It would get more interesting if we get to know that money was transerred between the corporates to barkha as an exchange for this favor.

First of all to all the officers recorded the conversation of all these people, hats of to them you have done your duty to the nation as true sons of the soil. Ms.Barkha Dutt and to all other news journalist whose conversation recordings and transcripts are there on you tube and other websites, Please do not become power brokers, earlier we had corrupt politicians now we have to deal with both corrupt politicians, journalist and media houses.I am really surprised after listening to the transcripts as to how they could play such a role. This is totally unethical, they definitely need to apologise to the nation and face prosecution. The fourth pillar of democracy needs to stay neutral and clean.

Agree with Hari's opinion below.

People who want to know how Barkha Dutt wields her clout should google "chetan kunte". For someone who ostensibly swears by free speech, she shut him down by bringing the full might of the NDTV group on the poor blogger who just expressed his opinion about how her reporting put lives in danger, in a completely civil manner.

It's no surprise that this serious controversy over the tapes is finding almost zero mention in the mainstream media. And I'm sure NDTV is tracking every blog/website reporting on it and sending legal notices to them.

I think everyone who reads about this controversy anywhere should do their bit for people like Chetan Kunte by posting comments and making their own blog posts, making the task of the NDTV lawyers that much more difficult.

How can Barkha talk about free press when she wants the freedom to report on anything she likes, but others must take her permission before breaking such big news? All because it will embarrass her? Barkha is becoming a real desperate bitch. She would have loved to be on the other side of this story milking it for all its worth!
