The Hyderabad cyber crime police today arrested two individuals, Tamma Hema Mani and Konda Reddy, from Tirupati for their involvement in a matrimonial fraud case.
The case came to light after a 45-year-old Hyderabad resident reported being duped in May 2024. He said that he had connected with an unidentified woman through a divorce matrimony app. The woman, who introduced herself as Dr Prithi Reddy, claimed to be a cardiologist with MBBS and MD qualifications, and said that she was divorced.
As their conversations progressed on various social media platforms, the woman proposed marriage, which the man accepted. Soon after, she began asking for money under many pretexts.
Initially, she requested funds to treat a patient, but failed to repay the amount.
She contacted the victim again later claiming that her mother had passed away and that she urgently needed financial support. Trusting her, the victim transferred Rs 4,97,200 in multiple transactions, only to realize he had been deceived.
A police team led by Inspector Madhulatha, along with SI Praneetha, PC Sagar, PC Bhaskar and WPC Praneetha, successfully cracked the case in Andhra Pradesh.
The police have issued an advisory urging citizens to exercise caution while using matrimonial apps, which have become increasingly popular. They advised users to:
- Thoroughly research and verify profiles
- Trust cautiously and avoid sharing sensitive information with strangers
- Be skeptical of individuals who express love too quickly or request financial assistance early in the interaction
