Transgender Traffic Assistants Commendable At Jobs
Six months after the Telangana government had appointed 44 transgenders as Traffic Assistants in Hyderabad, their performance has been found to be good.
The Telangana government had appointed 44 transgenders as Traffic Assistants in Hyderabad in December 2024. Now, after six months, their performance has reportedly been found to be commendable.
The government had adopted this as a pilot project, and had requested a report after six months based on the conduct of these individuals and the feedback received. Today, a review meeting was held at the Secretariat to access their performance.
During the meeting, minister Seethakka commended the Traffic Assistants for their work, which she said had garnered widespread satisfaction.
Traffic officials present at the meeting too said that the Traffic Assistants were working harmoniously with police station staff and were diligent in their duties. The assistants also participated in traffic bandobast duties alongside other personnel, the officials said.
Seethakka added that the performance of these 44 persons on the job had inspired even other State governments and the Union government to initiate similar measures.
She took the opportunity to also announce that the transgender community would be allotted Indiramma housing under the disability quota. She also mentioned the establishment of Maitri Clinics, and said that efforts would be made to create more opportunities for transgender individuals in other government departments.
She reiterated that the primary objective of the program was to provide equal opportunities and integrate the transgender community into the mainstream of society.
The Traffic Assistants and NGO members expressed their gratitude to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for giving them recognition they had not received in the past 76 years.
They affirmed that they were performing their duties without difficulties and were respected by their fellow police personnel. They shared that while they once feared the police, they now felt honoured to work alongside them, and that the government's decision had given them immense courage and increased the respect for them in society.
