On a night out in town and planning on getting drunk to high heavens? Just make sure you have someone sober along to drive you back down, as the Hyderabad Traffic Police has decided to go after cases of drunken driving with a vengeance.
Whereas earlier offenders could get away with paying fines ranging from Rs. 3000 -Rs. 4000, now, chances are very high that they could end up in court, or, depending on how drunk they are, even in jail.
The Traffic Police Dept., which had been getting increasingly strict with drunken drivers, has been going that extra mile to ensure proper punishment to these hazards on the road. Take these numbers for instance.
Since 1 January this year, to 30 March, as many as 2,722 cases of drunken driving have been registered, and, among these, as many as 142 offenders have been jailed for up-to 3 weeks. In the last week alone, 317 such cases have been registered, with 22 offenders being imprisoned as punishment.
So, if the thought of parting with your money doesn't stop you from taking to the wheel after drinking, let the thought of spending time in prison give you pause.
