The Telangana government today announced its plans to construct Skyways along national and domestic highways around Hyderabad in a bid to reduce traffic.
Skyways are similar to bridges, but at a much elevated height.
As per Detailed Project Reports submitted to the State government by the officials of the Roads & Buildings ministry, the skyways are proposed to be built in the following locations: 10 km of skyways at Rajiv Gandhi Marg, Secunderabad costing Rs. 1,800 crores; 6 km at Balanagar, Narsapur to the Outer Ring Road, with a base road of width 20 km, costing 1,300 crores; 6 km at Uppal-Ghatkesar, with a base road of width 14 km; 10 km at the Golnaka-Amberpet highway costing Rs. 300 crores.
The total length of skyways that is proposed to be laid is 22 km with a total cost of 4,300 crores. As of now, only the Golnaka-Amberpet skyway has been approved as it met all the criterion including necessary funds.
In order to get more land for the skyways, Telangana IT Minister K T Rama Rao met with Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and got around 60 acres of Central government land approved for the skyway at Rajiv Gandhi Marg.
The new infrastructure will supposedly relieve Hyderabad of its persistent traffic woes.
