Days ahead of the 3rd anniversary of the Mecca Masjid blast, two unidentified persons on a 2-wheeler opened fire at a police checkpost in Shah Ali Banda in the Old City area, on Friday. The incident took place at around 4pm.
A constable Ramesh died on the spot, in what is suspected to be a terror attack. He suffered injuries in the chest and on the shoulder. Ramesh's wife Santhamma is also a constable in Chittoor district.
According to the police, the bullets found at the spot of the incident are similar to those that were found on the site of the 2008 Falaknuma shootout. Also, a CD was found from the site.
Vikaruddin, a terrorist, is suspected to be behind the shootout. Vikaruddin is wanted for 2 other shootouts involving the Hyderabad city police. He is linked to the Darsgah-Jihad-e-Shahadat (DJS) and TGI (Tehreek-Galba-e-Islam).
Post the violent incident, Hyderabad and its surrounding districts are now on a high alert. Ever since the
riots that took place in the Old City earlier this year, the city has been on an alert, with the police subjecting citizens to searches, especially in the Old City.
