Life in Hyderabad came to a standstill as torrential rains whipped the city once again today.
Caused by the low pressure trough above the Bay Of Bengal, the downpours started at around 10 pm on Tuesday and picked up pace after the stroke of midnight across Telangana.
Hyderabad, too, experienced heavy rainfall for more than an hour this afternoon, leading to traffic jams at Lakdi Ka Pul, Punjagutta, Ameerpet, Begumpet, Purana Pul, Alwal, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Nampally, Narayanaguda and Kukatpally.
As per the weather department, within the first 30 minutes of the rains, several localities in the city recorded 2 cm to 3 cm rainfall. Two hours later, the size of the droplets was slightly above 5 cm.
Several streets have been flooded after waters from Hussain Sagar and other lakes reached the city from the sewers. As the police and the GHMC were unable to handle the chaos, the National Disaster Response Force was forced to step in to clear the roads in some parts of the city.
Telangana Minister K T Rama Rao, GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy, Hyderabad Mayor and several other officials and ministers visited the affected areas.
The rains are likely to intensify over the next few days, due to which the GHMC has advised citizens not to venture out except for emergencies.
Government schools and some private schools will remain shut indefinitely.
