Police Commissioner C V Anand today announced the induction of women horse riders into the force.
The Hyderabad City Police today introduced a women's mounted unit.
Police Commissioner C V Anand announced the induction of women horse riders into the force.
Ten women constables from the Armed Reserve (AR) underwent two months of training at the Goshamahal Mounted Unit to become part of the mounted police force.
Calling it a significant decision for the country, Anand said that these constables would be deployed for bandobust (security arrangements), VIP movements and patrolling.
"In a first, these women mounted police officers will be part of regular patrols. This step has been taken to encourage women to come to the forefront in all fields," Anand said.
As per reports, the city police is also expanding its dog squad. The 34 dogs currently in the unit are overworked, and so the force has decided to increase the number to 54.
The new dogs will be inducted after completing extensive training at the Integrated Intelligence Training Academy (IITA). They will be deployed for detecting explosives and narcotics, as well as tracking criminals.
To ensure quality, a special committee has been formed to select high-grade dogs from breeders across the country. 12 dogs have been acquired in the first phase, and more to be added in the future.
The police chief also said that in view of the upcoming construction of the new Osmania General Hospital (OGH), the mounted ground and stables at the Goshamahal Police Stadium would be relocated to a new site.
He also said that the State government had sanctioned funds for the new infrastructure, which would include buildings for the city security wing, a vehicle impound yard, new horse stables and a parade ground. A new dog kennel and mounted unit would also be constructed on 11.5 acres, with facilities for 60 dogs, he said. Tenders for this project would be finalised on September 8, he added.
The Commissioner also announced that all arrangements for the immersion of Ganesh idols, scheduled for Saturday, were complete.
The immersion is expected to last about 40 hours, with nearly 50,000 idols to be immersed at Tank Bund alone. Strong security measures have been put in place to prevent untoward incidents. A total of 29,000 police personnel will be deployed in shifts. In addition to the existing CCTV cameras, an additional 250 cameras and six drones will be used to monitor the immersion routes.
The Commissioner said that a ban on DJs had been imposed this year, citing multiple deaths and health issues among young people in the previous years. He said that this was a matter of public health, not religion, and that the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi had also agreed to cooperate with the police on the issue.
Anand said that efforts were being made to complete the Khairatabad Ganesh immersion between 6 am and 1:30 pm.
