One five-month-old infant died and some 15 others took ill after being administered a vaccination at an Urban Health Centre in Nampally on Thursday.
The affected infants are all between three and five months of age. All of them are undergoing treatment in Niloufer Hospital, and the conditions of three of them are stated to be critical.
According to reports, some 90 infants were administered vaccinations at the health centre managed by the State government. Soon after taking the vaccinations, however, the children developed health complications, following which the doctors rushed them to Niloufer Hospital in Nampally. As a precautionary measure, the police beefed up security in front of the hospital.
On knowing of the tragedy, the GHMC Zonal Commissioner for the area enquired about the conditions of the infants. Separately, a medical officers' committee started an inquiry into whether the incident happened due to negligence of the medical staff or due to wrong medicines being delivered.
Responding to the incident, Health Minister Etala Rajendar called up the Niloufer Hospital doctors and asked them to provide best possible treatment. He also left for Hyderabad from Huzurabad to visit the hospital personally.
