By-elections to 64 Assembly seats in 17 States, including the Huzurnagar Assembly constituency's seat in the Telangana Assembly, and a Union Territory will be held on October 21, and the results will be declared on October 24, the Election Commission announced on Saturday.
The EC said that the notification for the by-elections would be released on September 23. The last date for the filing of nominations will be September 30, and the scrutiny of nomination papers will be done by October 1.
"The last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 3, and the date before which the election needs to be completed is October 27," the EC added.
The ruling TRS has announced S Saidi Reddy as its candidate for the by-election to Huzurnagar Assembly seat.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao announced Reddy's candidature on Saturday. The announcement was made after the Chief Minister discussed the TRS' choice of candidate with Minister G Jagadish Reddy and senior leaders of the party.
Reddy, in the 2018 Assembly elections, had contested on the TRS ticket from the same constituency but had lost by a narrow margin to Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president N Uttam Kumar Reddy. However the Congress leader later resigned as the Huzurnagar MLA following his election to the Lok Sabha from the Nalgonda constituency.
There is infighting happening in the Telangana Congress over the party's candidate for the same seat. Uttam Kumar Reddy has announced the name of his wife and former MLA Padmavathi Reddy as the Congress candidate for the same seat. Separately, TPCC Working President and MP A Revanth Reddy announced the name of S Kiran Kumar Reddy, spokesman of the party, as the candidate, and has complained to the AICC that Uttam Kumar Reddy took the decision to field his wife without consulting and getting on board other TPCC leaders. Padmavathi Reddy is however likely to get the ticket.
The BJP has not announced its candidate for the seat yet.
