The Hyderabad High Court on Thursday administered a shock to the Telangana government on the GO issued by it curtailing the time schedule of the GHMC elections.
Setting aside the impugned GO, the High Court passed a stay order on the government's decision curtailing the GHMC election process to 15 days.
The High Court also directed the State government to complete the election process of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation by February 9 or 10.
When the State government submitted to the Court during the hearing that it would complete the process of reservation of divisions by Saturday, the Court faulted the style of functioning of the officials concerned.
The Court also made it clear that barring the Assembly, no one had any power to make any changes to the Municipal Act.
The State Election Commission told the High Court that it would release the election notification by Sunday, and sought 31 days' time to conduct the polling.
It may be mentioned here that the Opposition parties, including the TDP and BJP, had condemned the TRS government's decision to curtail the election process to 15 days, and termed the action as undemocratic.
