Several places in Telangana received heavy rains resulting from a cyclonic circulation in the early hours of Friday. Hyderabad received a whopping 7.5 centimetres rainfall, and Saroornagar (Rangareddy), Mallial (Karimnagar) and Jukkal (Nizamabad), too, received 7 centimetres rainfall.
The rains, accompanied by thunder and lighting, in Hyderabad gave much-needed relief to the citizens being bludgeoned by an incredibly hot summer, but also caused havoc by felling walls, trees and billboards across the city.
Several parts of the city were flooded, and power supply got disconnected as trees and power poles got uprooted. Due to the downpour from early hours, many key localities of town including Miyapur, Madhapur, Rayadurgam, Gachibowli, L B Nagar, Vanasthalipuram, Hayatnagar, Musheerabad, Chikkadpally, RTC crossroads, Parsigutta, Chilkalguda, Addagutta, Begumpet, Bowenpally, Alwal and Trimulgherry were inundated with rain water. Huge trees and cut-outs were uprooted by strong winds near the Telugu Thalli flyover, Secretariat and Indira Park. Trees fell and billboards crashed into the streets at NTR Marg, Qutubullahpur and Koti.
The GHMC's emergency crews were unable to remove the obstructions on Friday morning, resulting in the rush hour traffic tying itself up into a gridlock all over the city. GHMC officials needed to work along with the traffic police to divert the vehicular traffic.
There was no loss of life, but four persons were hospitalized with injuries in Madhapur, and damage was caused to property in many places. A petrol pump caught fire in the downpour at Moghalpura in the Old City.
The India Meteorological Department in Hyderabad forecast cloudy skies on Friday, too, and a possible thunder or dust storm in the evening. The IMD also said that thunderstorms accompanied by squalls / hail were very likely at a few places in the districts of Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Nalgonda, Medak, Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy and Khammam of Telangana in the coming three days.
