Heavy rain, accompanied by gales, lashed Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts on Friday, following the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal.
According to sources, District Collector N Srikanth in Srikakulam has set up a control room in his office to review the situation on an hourly basis.
He has also warned officials to evacuate people staying in low-lying areas to safer places. He has asked fishermen not to venture into the sea as well.
The farmers in the district, meanwhile, are nervous that the heavy rain may damage crops.
According to meteorological sources, the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has turned into a depression, and lies 350 km east of Visakhapatnam. It is likely to intensify and cross the coast between Gopalpur and Paradip in Orissa by Friday night.
Strong winds travelling at a speed of 45 to 55 km per hour might blow across and along the coast.
Danger signals have been hoisted at Visakhapatnam and Kakinada ports.
