Indian Railway's arm Railtel, which provides internet services as RailWire via its network along with Google, announced on Friday the launch of free high-speed public Wi-Fi services at the Kacheguda railway station in Hyderabad.
With this, Google would have rolled out public Wi-Fi services at 10 key rail stations, enabling internet access to over 1.5 million Indians every day. Starting with the launch at Mumbai Central earlier this year, the public free Wi-Fi services have been offered in many other stations including the Pune, Bhubhaneshwar, Bhopal, Ranchi, Raipur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad (Kacheguda), Ernakulam Jn (Kochi) and Visakhapatnam railway stations.
The service in Hyderabad will be formally inaugurated by union railway minister Suresh Prabhu soon.
"With the addition of the Kacheguda railway station, the network is now live in 10 stations across the country, and we are scaling up our efforts to roll out quickly to cover some of the smaller stations where connectivity is much more limited. As internet adoption grows in India, easy and affordable access to high-speed networks is the real need of the hour. When 100 stations are enabled with Wi-Fi, this project will be the largest publicly accessible high speed Wi-Fi network in the country, but our real hope is that this project will set new benchmarks in delivering reliable and consistent connectivity in the country," said Gulzar Azad, Head of Access Project, Google India.
