GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain expresses hope that Hyderabad will be a slum-free zone in the next few years.
In his press conference following his election, Majid Hussain proposed several schemes that he hopes to implement.
He said that there are 1,472 identified slums in the GHMC limits, and that housing schemes for the poor would be taken up in 290 slums under the Rajiv Awas Yojna, in the first phase.
According to the Mayor, 70 slums where housing projects will be taken up have already been short-listed, as have another 153 slums for which civic infrastructure facilities, at an estimated cost of Rs. 550 crore, will be provided.
Hussain thanked MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi for nominating him as the party's candidate for the post.
He said, "It is almost after 21 years that the MIM has got the opportunity again to have its mayor in the GHMC, and I'm happy to be elected for the post".
Further, he added that besides the implementation of the on-going schemes, he would also focus on the development of civic infrastructure in the heart of the city, which covers MCH and other areas, including 12 municipalities.
He said that he would try to do justice to all the 150 divisions by making sure that no area lags behind the others in terms of civic amenities.
"Even though the GHMC region contributes about Rs. 70,000 crore annually in revenue to the Central and state governments, by way of taxes and exports, this premier civic body is not getting its due share of the taxes," he said.
He added that efforts will be made to obtain a larger share of revenues for the GHMC. Further, he asked the state government to increase the GHMC's share in Motor Vehicle Tax, VAT, Profession Tax, Entertainment Tax and other sources of revenues. (INN)
