Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will stop using air-conditioners till February 2017, as part of its austerity drive and to increase revenue.
GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy issued orders asking his subordinates in the central, zonal and circle offices to ensure minimum usage of electricity by switching OFF air conditioners utill the end of February.
Reddy said that there were 137 ACs in the central office and each AC consumed three units per hour. By not using ACs, the GHMC would save Rs. 15 lakhs each month.
"The GHMC is footing an electricity bill of over Rs. 3.75 lakhs monthly on ACs alone. But with the new initiative, we will save this amount for the entire winter," he added.
