A leader of the Telangana unit of the TDP, Katragadda Prasuna, today alleged that the biggest civic body of the state, the GHMC, was "completely debt-ridden" and that it was "headed towards bankruptcy".
She stated that she was "pained" to see the corporation, which had once flourished as a "surplus income" body, at its present "pathetic financial condition".
Stating that the corporation had worked wonderfully during the rule of former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu, the leader claimed that the body had been plunged into a debt trap by the current TRS government.
"The GHMC was a body that once had Rs 800 crore as fixed deposits. This was the reality during the rule of the TDP. However, under the current Telangana government, the fixed deposits have been steadily siphoned off by corrupt leaders," Prasuna alleged.
She said that the buildings owned by the state and union governments had arrears running into crores of rupees in the form of property tax and asked how Hyderabad was to be transformed into a global city while it was being pushed into a "debt trap".
The leader also alleged that the corporation, which contributed "a total of 60% to the state government's income", was being destroyed now, and pointed out that due to the weakness of the ULB, the capital city was facing many sanitation-related woes as well as issues of inundation and flooding.
