GHMC Corporators Turn Up Late For GBM, Upset MP

The GHMC's General Body Meeting started at 10am instead of 10:30am, due to lack of quorum. The reason - Corporators took their time, strolling in at leisure.
Hyderabad | 21st June 2014
Hyderabadis have a reputation for being laidback. A half-hour or 1-hour delay is not considered any real delay. The same appears to be the case with the Corporators of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

The GHMC's General Body meeting was originally scheduled to start at 10am on Saturday. However, except for a few including Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain, corporators did not turn up in time for the meeting. As a result, the GHMC meeting could not start on time due to a lack of quorum.

Finally, the meeting started at 10:35am upon the quorum being attained.

Senior Parliamentarian and Secunderabad MP Bandaru Dattatreya was visibly upset with the attitude of young corporators. During his speech in the council, he advised corporators to be punctual. He said 10am should mean 10am and not 10:30am. He said that if the corporators felt that 10am was too early for them to reach the GHMC Headquarters, then they should have convened the meeting at 12 noon.

Making a clarification, the Mayor said although he was present, the other corporators did not reach the council hall on time.

Later, some corporators took the issue lightly, and wondered how a half-hour delay could be considered as a delay in Hyderabad.

Interestingly, of 148 corporators, only 108 participated in the meeting.

3 Lok Sabha MPs - Bandaru Dattatreya (Secunderabad), Visveshwar Reddy (Chevella) and Malla Reddy (Malkajgiri) - participated in the meeting.

The MLAs who participated in the meeting included Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Teegala Krishna Reddy, Prakash Goud, Kausar Mohiuddin, Jaffer Hussain, R Krishnaiah and Ahmed Balala.

Members of Legislative Council (MLCs) Syedaminul Hassan Jafferi, M S Prabhakar, Venkat Rao and Mohammd Saleem also participated in the meeting.

However, Deputy Chief Minister Mahmood Ali, city minister T Padma Rao and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi did not participate in the meeting although they are part of the GHMC as ex-officio members.

Rajya Sabha MPs from the city too did not participate in the meeting. (INN)
