There was chaos in the GHMC general body meeting held today.
A heated argument broke out between the BRS and the Congress corporators, who pushed each other, leading to an atmosphere of tension.
As soon as the meeting began this morning, the Council paid tributes to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and industrialist Ratan Tata.
Later, Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi announced that the GHMC budget would be presented in the Council. However, the BRS and the BJP corporators objected, insisting on discussing people's issues first.
Despite this, Vijayalakshmi proceeded to present the budget, with an outlay of Rs 8,440 crore for the financial year 2025-26, without further discussion. She then invited the members to speak on the budget.
A scuffle then broke out between the BRS and the Congress corporators at the podium. The BRS corporators demanded a discussion on the implementation of the six guarantees of the Congress first, while the Congress corporators raised slogans calling for a discussion on the budget. In response, the Mayor adjourned the House for five minutes.
Despite the resumption of the meeting soon after, the BRS and the BJP corporators continued to protest. Some BRS corporators surrounded the Mayor's podium holding placards, only to be stopped by Congress corporators who tore the placards. This led to further arguments between the corporators of both parties.
Four BRS corporators were then escorted out by the marshals and taken into custody by the police. In protest, other BRS corporators again surrounded the Mayor's podium, demanding an apology and the return of the detained corporators. They insisted that the House be reconvened to discuss public issues.
The chaos continued as the Mayor, frustrated by the disruption, directed the police to bring the detained corporators back into the House. However, the four corporators refused to return, and an argument followed.
In response, the Mayor suspended all BRS corporators. When they were escorted out by the marshals, they protested in front of the GHMC office, where they were taken into custody by the police.
