In a daring heist in broad daylight, a five-member gang robbed Muthoot Finance at Beeramguda in the Sangareddy district on Tuesday night and escaped with 40 kg gold worth Rs. 12 crores.
On receipt of information, Cyberabad Commissioner of Police Sandeep Sandilya rushed to the crime scene along with Sangareddy DSP Chandrashekar Reddy and constituted five special teams to nab the culprits. The police teams spread a dragnet all along the route from Patancheru to Zaheerabad and conducted intensive checks.
According to the police, the team, suspected members of the Padri gang from Maharashtra, came in a red colour Scorpio car. They barged into the insurance company disguised as officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) who came for a surprise check of all records and locker rooms. After the company authorities opened the locker rooms, the culprits weilded guns and threatened the company staff and locked them up in a bathroom. And after stealing the ornaments and cash, the gang escaped in their car.
Speaking to the media after the investigation, police officials said that the CCTV cameras fixed on the premises were missing. While the unofficial version is that the culprits had stolen the CCTV cameras, the police suspect that the robbers in nexus with some company officials stole them. This led to the assumption that the plan for the operation was laid well in advance, and the alleged complicity of some of the staff in the finance company is also not ruled out. Four staff members of the company are now being questioned by the investigating officers.
The cops said that the five offenders came inside the office of the agency in Beeramguda. One of the offenders wore a turban and a fake beard and went by the name of Surjeet Patel. He was also wearing a black suit. The second offender, who initially wore a black mask, later took it off and was wearing a peach coloured beanie beneath. The third offender disguised as a traffic cop wearing a white shirt and grey trousers, the fourth offender was in a light brown suit, and the fifth offender was wearing a military cap.
According to some eyewitnesses, the Hindi-speaking gang escaped in the car towards Hyderabad.
As the news about the robbery broke out, customers, who had mortgaged their gold ornaments for loans, gathered before its premises and demanded that the institution reimburses their jewellery at once. They slammed the company authorities for allowing "CBI officials" to just walk-in without first consulting the police. The agitated customers suspect that there might be something more to it than what meets the eye, and wanted a thorough probe into the matter.
Shockingly, a few years ago, a similar burglary took place near to the insurance company. Back then, some members of a terrorist outfit, who broke prison, raided Muthoot Mini Fin Corp and robbed most of the currency and ornaments.
