With about 1,600 workers who seek to go back home attacking policemen and destroying their vehicles today, heavy tension prevailed at the Kandi IIT premises in Sangareddy district.
L&T and the Shapoorji Pallonji companies who have been engaged to work on constructing the IIT campus buildings in the Kandi area reportedly have not paid salaries for two months, and are forcing the workers to return to work. The workers are demanding that they be paid for March and April first, and with apparently no other go, resorted to attacks for being forced to resume work.
They reportedly pelted stones and smashed window glasses, and attacked the policemen who intervened, with sticks.
To defuse the tension, district SP Chandrasekhar Reddy convinced the workers that they would be paid and that their problems would be addressed.
He also took some of the workers to the district Collector M Hanumantha Rao, who promised timely salaries and help.
"We will talk to L&T and Shapoorji Pallonji to get them to pay the pending salaries. The migrant labourers have agreed to resume work from tomorrow," Rao said after the talks.
He said that the migrant labourers were seeking to return to their home states which was not possible due to the lockdown, but that resumimg work would at least give them income.
