IT and Industries Minister K T Rama Rao today announced that a France-based multinational company, Safran Group, had decided to set up a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Hyderabad, and would make an initial investment of $ 150 million (about Rs 1,185 crore).
Safran designs, develops and manufactures aircraft engines and rocket engines, as well as various other aerospace and defense-related equipment and their components. This will be its largest MRO globally, and the first engine MRO established by a global Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in India.
"Jubilant to welcome @SAFRAN group's decision to select Hyderabad for its Mega Aero Engine MRO in India. This will be SAFRAN's largest MRO globally and will be the first Engine MRO established by a global OEM in India (sic)," KTR tweeted today.
The MRO and test cell is expected to create 800-1,000 employment opportunities for high-skilled people. It will service the company's Leap 1A and Leap 1B aero engines used by Indian and foreign commercial airlines. The project is also expected to have a huge multiplier effect on the local aerospace manufacturing and aviation ecosystem in Telangana, according to the minister.
