The state government has decided to supply free doctor-prescribed medicines to the poor in all government hospitals.
To begin with, under a pilot project, the free medicines supply program will be launched in Adilabad, Srikakkulam and Chittoor.
A decision to this effect was taken by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at a high-level review meeting held at the Secretariat on Monday.
Briefing media persons on the decision taken at the review meeting, Health & Medical Education Minister D L Ravindra Reddy said that in addition to the 2011 budget of Rs. 207 crore allotted, an additional Rs. 102 crore was made to meet the expenditure on free drugs on prescriptions written by government doctors.
It may be mentioned here that the CM had, on July 22, disclosed that the state government would launch one new scheme every 2 months.
The free medicines scheme will be extended to all the 23 districts of the state if the pilot is successful. (INN)
