Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya today admitted that the demonetization of the 500 and 1,000 currency bills by the Centre caused havoc and inconvenience for the general public.
Talking to the media, Dattatreya said that while the demonetization of the two bills caused problems to the public and small traders across the country, it would have long-term positive results. He added that the Centre was only trying to tackle corruption with an iron fist, and prevent black money accumulation and tax evasions.
The Union Minister alleged that some inimical political parties were playing the spoil-sport and misleading people on the decision to invalidate the two notes.
He also denied the Opposition's charges that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had leaked the information on the demonetization to some Party leaders and business empires several months prior to the announcement.
Dattatreya praised Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for meeting Modi personally and discussing the issue with him. He suggested that the Chief Ministers of other States, too, give their suggestions to the Centre on the implications of demonetization instead of protesting without reason.
He said that he would meet the Prime Minister on Monday and bring the plight of labourers and other low income groups to his notice to find a solution.
The minister asked the people not to panic as the Centre was taking all necessary measures to distribute adequate number of the new Rs. 500 notes as well as Rs. 100, Rs. 50 and Rs. 20 notes to ATMs.
