Since the 60 SHE teams were pressed into service by the Cyberabad Police on December 24, 23 persons have been caught for engaging in eve-teasing, stalking and harassing women in public places.
The offenders caught vary from school boys to old men - 15 of the 23 are minors. There have been instances where educated men with B. Tech. degrees or marketing backgrounds were also apprehended while troubling women in public.
The teams, besides concentrating on keeping a tab on these offenders, have also visited colleges, ladies hostels, bus stations, IT companies, construction sites where unskilled woman laborers work, and other places to conduct awareness campaigns on eve-teasing.
3 of the 23 have been booked under the City Police Act, and a total of 45 persons have been counselled. According to the Cyberabad police, every Saturday, professional counselling is being organized in the CAW (Crime Against Women) Cell situated in the CP Office.
The offenders are also asked to join the teams in spreading awareness on women's safety. Counselling is done under the guidance of the DCP (Malkajgiri) Rama Rajeshwari, ACP (Crimes) Usha, ACP (Cyber Crimes) Snehita and trained counsellors, in the presence of the counsellee's family members.
The teams are planning to conduct more awareness programmes for "target groups" in colleges, for both men and women. They also plan to educate women about how to report any incidence of abuse, and to teach men about the laws relating to teasing, stalking, other forms of abuse etc.
The teams are also urging institutions and establishments to display boards at workplaces publicizing "Dial 100" and the Facebook page of "Cyberabad SHE Teams".
In addition, they are planning to conduct seminars involving NGOs, govt. organizations, women/men from various walks of life and parents.
Advisories are being sent to the RTC to sensitize drivers and conductors to enable them to help a woman when she reports abuse in transit. Special drives are being planned to keep a tab on autos plying in the outskirts, which are used by a huge chunk of womenfolk to travel. (INN)
