The Congress today held a massive protest at the GHMC headquarters demanding that the State government take steps to provide assistance to the rain-affected residents of the State capital.
High tension prevailed at the GHMC office due to the protest. The Congress leaders were not allowed by the police to enter the GHMC premises. Several leaders, including party leader Vijaya Reddy tried in vain to climb the main gate of the GHMC office. The leaders then raised slogans against the State government for its "failure" in coming to the rescue of the citizens, and demanded that it take immediate steps to provide relief.
Party leaders M Anjan Kumar Yadav, former PCC president V Hanumantha Rao, former MP Mallu Ravi, former MLA M Kodanda Reddy, former MLC Ramulu Naik, TPCC vice-president Chamala Kiran Kumar, GHMC party floor leader D Rajasekhar Reddy, Anil Yadav, Vijaya Reddy and others took part in the protest.
Speaking on the occasion, the protestors targeted State minister K T Rama Rao over his claims that Hyderabad had become a global city, and alleged that Hyderabad had actually become a city of garbage. Pointing out to the low-lying areas of the city being inundated, they asked what the MLAs and ministers were doing when people were suffering, and demanded that the State government sanction Rs 10,000 to each family in distress.
Later, some party leaders were allowed inside the office to submit a memorandum to the authorities. However, the Congress leaders then protested against the behaviour of GHMC Commissioner Ronald Rose in his peshi after they entered the headquarters. They alleged that the Commissioner had refused to take their memorandum. Senior party leaders Mallu Ravi, V Hanumantha Rao, Kodanda Reddy, Vijaya Reddy and others raised slogans against the Commissioner for his attitude.
