Hyderabad | 14th November 2010
Chief Minister K Rosaiah, accompanied by All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Digvijay Singh, paid floral tributes to the statue of the first prime minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru, on his 120th birth anniversary at Abids Junction.
The 2 leaders then released doves, the symbol of peace.
Hyderabad Mayor Banda Kartika Chandra Reddy, senior Congress leader V Hanumanth Rao and Mahila Congress chief Ganga Bhavani were among the leaders who took part in the program.
Later, Digvijay Singh started the closing sessions of 125th anniversary of the formation of the Indian National Congress. The closing sessions will continue till November 19th at Gandhi Bhavan.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Rosaiah recalled the services of Pandit Nehru who had flung into the freedom struggle after completing his studies. He stated that the late leader had devoted his life to serve people despite coming from an affluent family.
The Chief Minister also recalled the services of former prime minister, the late Indira Gandhi, by saying that she had served the people unreservedly, and then extolled the virtues of present Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
Rosaiah stated that Sonia Gandhi had devoted her life to the service of people without any desire of posts. He reminded that she had lost her husband and mother-in-law to terrorism, but had remained undaunted in her desire to serve the people.
Many parties and people had tried their best to bring down the Congress party, but had failed since the party had the welfare of the people foremost in its mind, the Chief Minister said.
Rosaiah pointed out that U S President Barack Obama, during his visit to Mumbai and New Delhi, had described India as a developed country, not as a developing one. He said that this description came after the relentless efforts by the Congress party to develop the country.
Pradesh Congress Committee president D Srinivas Rao, during his speech, stated that the Nehru-Gandhi family had served the people without any desire for posts and without any care for their own lives.
Srinivas pointed out that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had not opted for any post, but had devoted their lives to the welfare of the people.
