The Congress party on Friday asked the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen to allow GHMC Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy to continue in her post for one more year.
As per the power-sharing agreement the Congress and MIM had after the GHMC elections, Karthika Reddy will have to relinquish her post on 4 December on the completion of 2 years, to facilitate the election of an MIM candidate as the next GHMC Mayor.
Likewise, Deputy Mayor Jaffer Hussain Meraj will need to quit his post, which will be filled by a Congress candidate.
The parties will again swap these posts after 2 years.
However, Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana on Friday had a meeting with MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, asking him to postpone the post-swapping agreement by one year.
Later, talking to media persons, Botsa said that the Congress has sought the extension of Karthika Reddy's tenure for one more year, to complete work pending in the GHMC.
He said that he would also discuss the issue with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and GHMC Congress President Danam Nagender.
However, sources say that Akbaruddin Owaisi has refused the proposal and asked Botsa to take steps towards the election of an MIM candidate for the post by 4 December. (INN)
