The torrential rains, due to the formation of a depression in the Bay of Bengal, have left a trail of destruction in 270 mandals.
Disaster Management Commissioner T Radha, on Tuesday, disclosed that the death toll due to the incessant rains in coastal Andhra has now risen to 16.
Talking to media persons at the Secretariat, the Disaster Management Commissioner also revealed that the rains have damaged standing crops in 99,730 hectares. He said that the torrential rains, due to the formation of a depression in the Bay of Bengal, have left a trail of destruction in 270 mandals.
There were heavy to very heavy rains in 53 mandals in East Godavari, 43 in Visakhapatnam, 45 in West Godavari, 20 in Nellore, 39 in Krishna and 27 mandals in Vizianagaram district.
The Commissioner revealed that in all, 26,574 people living in low-lying areas have been shifted to 73 relief camps set up in these districts.
Radha said 8,884 people were shifted to 38 relief camps in East Godavari district, 15,451 to 23 camps in Visakhapatnam district, 100 to 2 camps in Nellore and 2,139 people shifted to 16 camps in Krishna district.
East Godavari has lost 5 persons, 5 were reported dead in Visakhapatnam, one each in West Godavari and Vizianagaram, and 2 each in Nellore and Prakasam districts. In addition to these 16, 6 persons have been reported missing in East Godavari district, Radha revealed. And in all 2,698 houses were damaged.
Crops in a total of 99,730 hectares were damaged, including 22,557 hectares in East Godavari, 13,400 hectares in Visakhapatnam, 31,000 hectares in West Godavari, 400 hectares in Nellore, 43,707 hectares in Krishna, 12,382 hectares in Srikakulam and 7,284 hectares in Vizianagaram district.
